Chapter 7

“Jackpot.” Jimmy Hong stood in the doorway of the pantry and tossed an empty duffel bag to the center of the floor. “Clay, take a look at this.”

Clay worked his way past the island in the kitchen to see what Jimmy had found. He shined a flashlight into the darkened room to find a pantry packed with canned goods and other non-perishable items. When he caught sight of the cans of chili and soups his stomach began to grumble and his mouth watered. “Looks like a good haul to me. What do we grab?”

“Anything that ain’t nailed down. If we can fit it in the trucks, we take it. What we can’t use for ourselves, we can trade for something else later.”

Weber squeezed in the doorway to get a look. “Spaghetti-O’s? Shit yeah! And they got ramen too!”

“Okay, you start packing this stuff up. Just like the grocery store, try not to put the heavy canned shit in the duffel with the bags of potato chips. Oh, and grab the boxes of cereal too. Take it all.” Jimmy pointed a finger at Weber to make his point. “You hear me?”

“Yeah, yeah. I don’t know why you care so much about smashing up a few potato chips though.” Weber never made eye contact with his buddy, he stood transfixed on the shelves full of food.

“Because, dumbshit, snacks like that are worth their weight in gold. I can barter those things for all kinds of stuff. So be fucking careful. Got it?”

“Hooah.”

They’d been at this for hours now, moving methodically from one house to the next. There had only been the two infected in the first house, while the rest in the cul-de-sac were blissfully quiet and empty. Most of the homes had refrigerators and freezers full of rotting food, with not a whole lot they could use, so this pantry came as a welcome surprise.

Heavy-booted footfalls came running up a flight of carpeted stairs. “Guys, I think I found something.” Gray had her Squad Automatic Weapon slung across her back with her helmet hanging off a canteen by the chinstrap.

Clay raised an eyebrow. “What did you find?”

“Oh, I think you’re gonna like it.” Gray turned on her heel and went back downstairs to the basement, pumping her short legs as fast as they could go.

Clay shrugged his shoulders. “Okay. Come on, Jimmy. Let’s go see what she found.”

They mounted the stairs to find Gray at the bottom, waving to them. It was dark down there and she had her massive Maglite flashlight switched on, an item that occasionally doubled as a club in a pinch. They both flicked on their lights and came down, still a bit wary about what might still be lurking around in the dark.

When they got to the base of the stairs, they swept their lights around in a quick scan. The previous owner had spent quite a bit of time and effort turning the basement into a “man cave” and it became immediately clear the previous owner had been an outdoorsman.
